Tony Cummings spoke to New Orleans pastor and singer STEVEN PERRILLOUX about his fascinating life.

Whether it's traditional church wreckers roaring out God's praises, smooth virtuosos crooning soulful encouragement to the saints, or new urban evangelists giving gospel an R&B or hip-hop flavour, one this is certain, African American gospel is flourishing. Countless gospel albums are being released into the booming market. But one release that stands boldly out from the crowd is 'Only You' by Steven Perrilloux. Here is an album that follows none of the popular stylistic paths. Best described as old school soul gospel with a jazz undertone, it is the work of a singer, pastor, actor and percussionist. As well as being a showcase for Steven Perrilloux's richly soulful voice 'Only You' is also a platform for Bernard Stevenson who wrote all the songs and produced the project. Steven explained how the two came to form such a close musical relationship.

Steven Perrilloux of Reserve has the #1 hit on the Gospel charts

Perrilloux of Reserve grew up like many young men - attending Leon Godchaux High School and playing drums in the band.  However, in 1980 when visions knocked him sideways and into the new direction mandated by God.

The new direction has produced a hit gospel music CD.

"I was called to the ministry supernaturally," he said in a recent interview.  On July 5, 1980, he had a vision of a powerful light in the sky.  The second vision, later that year, was a vision of Jesus, filled with God's glory.  The third was a gigantic vision of the smiling face of Jesus, during which Perrilloux was told to take the gifts he had received and share them with the world.
