listen out for 2007... Steven Perrilloux - Only You |

Soulwalking
Pastor Steven Pellirroux is a new name to me. Gospel in roots, obviously, this set has been received really well in the better publications, especially those based north of Watford Services in the U.K.! I was alerted to this mini album by the excellent Bill Buckley in Blues and Soul magazine. Bill enthused about this release just before Christmas in that publication (the album states it was originally recorded in back in 2005) and I began to notice a song called 'Do The Right Thing' appearing in various charts by those in the know. I contacted the excellent 2Funky people, who I bought a copy from and I am very pleased I did. The overall feel of the CD is pretty laid back, however, 'Do The Right Thing' is one of the more uptempo outings on offer here. I must confess to really liking the melodic title track as well. I hope Steven makes enough finance out of this release to make further future recordings. He is very talented, has a nice voice and can pen a tune! Can't say that about many of today's artists. Great recommendation, Bill. |

Steven Perrilloux: Only You (Crosstown South Music) |

Sweets
Right at year end comes one of 2006's top modern soul tunes. It's ensconced on this lovely 98 tracker from Louisiana-based actor/singer/pastor Steven Perrilloux. The song in question is "Do the Right Thing" - a beautiful crisp mid-tempo lilter of a cut that knowing modern soul people would die for. You've probably guessed it’s another gospel song and it dominates the album even though another track, "Only You" spent months topping the US indie gospel chart. That one, by the way, is a pretty ballad. Elsewhere there's another fine cut in "Dance". With a full brass line up, it reminds me of Tower of Power in their mellower moments. |

Reserve minister sends message with music |
|
by Judy Creekmore River Parishes Picayune Contributing Writer
Since 1980 the Rev. Steven Perrilloux, pastor of Riverlands Christian Center in Reserve, said he has been guided by God through visions. The first vision directed him to create a ministry, he said. Then, in another, to expand his ministry through music. These days, with his CD "Only You" gaining popularity locally and abroad, Perrilloux said, he feels he is about to realize the full intent of God's plan for him. Perrilloux said God touched his life through a vision in the summer of 1980, causing him to change his self-destructive ways. He began accumulating musical equipment to satisfy a new desire within him.

RESERVE – Pastor Steven Perrilloux is known by many Reserve residents for his ability to inspire others with the word of God through speech and Gospel at Riverland Christian Center, but his voice is now spreading overseas and gaining worldwide acclaim.
The popular British magazine “Blues and Soul” recently named Perrilloux’s Gospel song, “Do the Right Thing,” the number one song on their Specials Board, a list of singles hand-selected by staff writers.

Steven Perrilloux - Only You |
|
by Tony Cummings Cross Rhythms Music Editor
Here's a musical subgenre seldom approached by gospel musicians, slinky, 3.00 am style jazz soul. And in truth it's beautifully executed thanks to a fine singer - New Orleans pastor and actor Perrilloux - and a gifted songwriter/producer Bernard Stevenson. Mike Rimmer has already enthused about the lightly funky "Do The Right Thing" and, other than the lack of real horns (a synth playing the horn parts is never the same somehow), it is a retro delight. As it turns out there are real horns on "Dance" and "Be Blessed" and they benefit greatly as a result. Excellent throughout are the female backing singers and Arron Stapley's delicious jazz guitar while Steven's hoarsely soulful vocal lends itself effortlessly to Bernard Stevenson's compositions of faith and devotion. Surely one of the most deliciously laid back gospel albums and I for one want to know more about this artist who's delivered such an unexpected gem. |
